The School of Regional Development Studies at Kanazawa University covers a unique field of study, which emphasizes practical involvement in regional societies. Based on the conventional academic disciplines, we have established a new education and research system that readily responds to contemporary demands. Within the new system we foster intellectual abilities and the power to take action, prerequisites for future leaders in the development of a human society in closer harmony with nature and culture.

Concept and goal of the school

The School of Regional Development Studies is a new institution for education and research, placing the study of regional development at its core, crossing the borders of conventional academic disciplines and faculties. This school aims to educate and enlighten, support social and natural environments and contribute to the development of diverse aspects of our lives, including culture, welfare and health. Our ultimate goal is to create a community that protects each individual’s dignity and human rights, and guarantees every single person a secure and peaceful life.

Research contents

The diverse disciplines that constitute regional development studies consist of two different components. One is the basic component, including studies of the basic theories for understanding humanity and society, as well as basic research such as social surveys to accurately measure the conditions of the community. The other is practical research which attempts to develop personnel with the capabilities to create a society that guarantees its citizens an enriching and safe life, and to develop a region as a foundation and environment for such a creation. Research at the School of Regional Development Studies is conducted mainly through surveys and fieldwork targeting communities, aiming to resolve various problems from the viewpoint of its individual citizens and of collective society.
