Concept and objectives of the course

“Environment” refers to the relationship between humans and nature; in other words, it is not only about nature but also equally about the technologies, cultures and systems that are part of our society. “Environmental coexistence” refers to a sustainable relationship between society and nature, and within that, human-to-human relationships based on fairness and cooperation. The purpose of this course is to develop human resources that will contribute to the realization of environmental coexistence in regional societies and local communities. To that end, students are provided with a broad range of knowledge covering the fields of both natural and social sciences. We foster the ability of students to understand in a deep and comprehensive way the correlations between the two, as well as the practical skill required to detect and analyze problems of the region in question and propose solutions for them.

Human resources we are aiming to develop

Regional societies are facing various environmental issues, including global warming, wildlife protection, woodlands preservation and conservation of homeland. There has been a demand for comprehensive approaches to seeking solutions, which couple these environmental issues with the region’s own social issues. In order to respond to that growing demand, this course produces people who have mastered a wide range of knowledge, who have the skills required to understand in a comprehensive manner both society and nature, and who will be playing active roles in the realization of environmental coexistence as members of government administrations, business organizations or non-profit organizations. In particular, we are developing personnel who will be able to tackle the problems of regional society in a collaborative manner.

Features of our curriculum

In order to train people to be able to contribute to the realization of “environmental coexistence”, we have set up a curriculum that emphasizes comprehensive, practical learning. Lecture topics span the fields of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, so that students can gain a comprehensive understanding of those fields. Also, to develop students’ practical skills, we have prepared an enhanced set of programs of exercises and practices, which are based on regional awareness. Our curriculum includes the designated requisite subjects for qualification as “Kankyo Saisei I (environmental restoration specialist) (basic)”
